VIEW THE PAST MENA TOUR 2015 AGENDA

Dec. 5 – 7: BAHRAIN (Manama) / PreMoney MENA Investor Event

Dec. 7 – 9: UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (Abu Dhabi + Dubai)

Dec. 9 – 11: JORDAN (Amman + Dead Sea)

Dec. 11 – 15: EGYPT (Cairo) / RiseUp Entrepreneurship Summit

In addition to mentoring startups, visiting incubator programs, joining investment dinners and diving into the local culture, we’ll ascend the tallest skyscraper in the world, swim in the Dead Sea, visit the historic pyramids in Giza, cruise (and dine!) down the Nile River, check out the mummies in the Egyptian Museum & much more.

PLUS, we’ll attend the first-ever PreMoney MENA investor event (produced by 500 Startups), as well as the annual RiseUp Summit in Cairo, one of the region’s top entrepreneurship events.

WHERE IN THE WORLD ARE WE GOING?

  • Manama, Bahrain – The Kingdom of Bahrain has the fastest growing economy in the Arab world, according to a 2006 report by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia. There has been a big push to support startups and SMEs over the past 5 years, with government grants, debt financing support, incubators, angel investment all available to startups setting up there. Bahrain is also seen as gateway to Saudi Arabia, the biggest economy in the region. With a strong local workforce, 100% foreign ownership of companies and a well established legal system, Bahrain is an attractive hub for startups looking to expand into the Gulf countries.
  • Abu Dhabi / Dubai, UAE – Abu Dhabi has made its mark as a global business hub. With two million people living there and a diverse range of over 150 nationalities enjoying a tax-free lifestyle, it has achieved extraordinary results in little over half a century. Over the last few years, the country has accounted for approximately 60% of the GDP of the UAE, all while operating as the world’s first zero-waste community. Moreover, the city is injecting huge financial allocations to help fund capital projects from 2013 to 2017, with a total of Dh330 billion distributed to various sectors. Abu Dhabi has entered a new era of development that, over the next 20 years, will become one of the world’s leading centers of excellence, for business, culture, infrastructure, tourism and social activities. Known as a gateway for global and regional technology, Dubai’s race to the top is most certainly beyond its 400 skyscrapers and the Burj Khalifa. It was only recently in 2000 that Dubai created the first and only information technology park (Dubai Internet City) in the MidEast with over 800 global + local tech companies. With a population doubling since 1995, and 80% of its residents as foreigners, Dubai is not just a fast-growing city—but a tech Mecca!
  • Amman, Jordan – Jordan, in many cases, leads the Middle East startup scene. The country now hosts about 75% of all Arabic content on the internet. As a small country, its entrepreneurs build for a regional audience… representing a huge, mostly untapped potential. For example, it has arisen to become number one place in the MENA region since 2001 in number of tech deals funded and second in amount of funds invested. Between 2001 and 2012, 900+ tech companies and startups have been founded in the country creating 84,000 new jobs (6% of total Jordanian labour force).
  • Cairo, Egypt – With a growing population of 90 million, 50% of which are below the age of 30 and tech-minded, Egypt is quickly becoming one of the fastest growing startup hubs in the world.  Many believe that Egypt’s best asset is its youth and with 40% internet penetration (growing at an exponential rate), massive e-commerce potential (expected to hit the $446.4 million mark by 2016), as well as a strategic geographic location, the country continues to prove to be an attractive investment environment.
